Blackwater Rivers of the ACE Basin

Blackwater. Alligators.  Plantations. Slaves. Rice.

The ACE Basin is a magnificent estuarine system created by the Ashepoo, Combahee and Edisto Rivers.

We will follow meandering black water creeks deep into the rice culture of the the past which defines the character of the landscape. Cypress trees cradling Osprey nests, remnants of the days when rice was king, and mirror-like reflections of the sky make this a trip not to be forgotten.

Salt Marsh and Barrier Islands

Saltwater. Oysters. Shrimp. Osprey. Dolphin.

We offer two different locations from which to explore our diverse natural history.

In the Beaufort Marsh Exploration tour, we explore thousands of acres of salt marsh, without leaving the city! Kayaking through  through a series of creeks, we'll search for bottlenose dolphin, blue crabs, oystercatchers, and many other salt marsh inhabitants. On this trip we beach the boats on a sandbar and catch marine organisms with a cast net. It's always a surprise to see what we find!

Our Hunting Island trip features a stop on a sandbar to throw the cast net, a walk on the beach, and a look at how the migratory nature of barrier islands shape our area.

Historic Beaufort

Civil War. Reconstruction.  Antebellum architecture.

Visit Historic Beaufort as it has been approached for centuries... from the water.

We have two trips that highlight Beaufort's interesting historical past: One takes you around the "Old Point" district and focuses on Antebellum homes and the Civil War. The other takes us to the Penn Center, the Souths' first school for freed slaves.
Join us to see why Beaufort is called "A Little Town with a Big History".

On the Historic Beaufort tour we emphasize Beaufort's unique history while floating past such houses as "The Oaks" and "Tidalholm" (where the "Big Chill' was filmed).

The Penn Center tour features a lovely paddle through a productive salt marsh and a visit to the Penn Museum (requires additional $5 entry fee).
